Look Marmotte Granfondo Alpes

08/07/2018 - 174km - 5000m/d+

Every cyclo tourist has come across fascinating stories during these renowned cyclo’s: some regarding the fantastic ambiance, others on the melting pot of nationalities or over the stunning and challenging courses, including the ascents of 4 legendary cols of the Alps. Conclusion: this Look Marmotte Alps has everything a cyclo-lover is looking for!

On the first week end of July all heroes of the bike are awaited on the starting line for what has become an unmissable international cycling event. After the Tour de France the Look Marmotte Granfondo Alps is the most important tourist event of the summer in the French Alps.

The organisation limits the number of available spots to 7.500. The majority of participants come from abroad: 88% or 6600 international cyclo-fans.

Participants of the Look Marmotte Granfondo Alps have often spent hours and hours on their bike training to be able to finish on the legendary Alpe d’Huez, whilst conquering 21 hairpin bends. It demands courage, dedication and determination to even attempt this challenge across Glandon, Télégraphe, Galibier and Alpe d’Huez.

Whether they aim for a certain time or just to be able to finish, every participant leaves Alpe d’Huez with a satisfying feeling knowing they have conquered this challenge.

Regulatory equipment including lighting, visibility vest, are MANDATORY to participate in Look Marmotte Granfondo Alpes.

Online registration closes on 03/07/2018

Look Marmotte Granfondo Alpes

The Look Marmotte Alps begins at sunrise in the heart of Bourg d’Oisans. Once the starting shot has sounded, the tension makes way for adrenaline and determined pedalling, all to the soundtrack of loud applause of the overlooking crowd. After a flat 10 kilometres, the first real obstacle can be seen in the distance: Col du Glandon (1 924m), a long but consistent climb of 20 kilometres with steep passages of up to 10%. After reaching the top, the chrono is frozen for the descent due to safety regulations. This gives time to recuperate and focus on the technical and steep descent. Once below, the road steadily rises to approach the Vallée de la Maurienne. Saint Michel de Maurienne is the starting point of the toughest challenge of the day: the succession of the Télégraphe (1 570m) and the Galibier (2 645m), or 2000 altimeters over 35km. The refreshment station in Valloire is most welcomed and lets participants know they have reached halfway. It is recommended to stock up on reserves as the ascent of the Galibier, known for its white snowed flanks, is just around the corner. The descent of the Galibier brings the participants over le Col du Lautaret towards Bourg d’Oisans.

Warning: due to numerous successive tunnels with low lighting, individual lighting is essential and COMPULSORY (light kit / visibility vest).

The 21-hairpin bends of Alpe d’Huez mark the ultimate difficulty of the day. And no less since it is a real challenge that awaits cyclists with the first 2 laces at 13% average. What a beautiful image to see all these cyclists battle their way up, mirroring numerous pros who did the exact same thing in the Tour de France. Once the finish line is crossed a mix of emotions, relief, pain and pride can be seen on the faces of the happy Finishers.

Exceptionally this year, the MAVIC stand for assistance and bicycle repair will not be present on the village and the race of the Look Marmotte Alps.
